Go Phil Go!

Oops, I wish I had said that differently! How many times have I said that? Too many to remember or count.

This week I received a call from a friend. He wanted to know if I still planned to attend the Tulsa Workshop in March. It is one of the meetings I have enjoyed the past two years. Last year was the best; Francis Chan spoke three times and was a great blessing. This year on Friday, March 21st the key note speaker is Phil Robertson.

If you haven’t heard about the ruckus caused by Phil, then you might need to get out a little more. Phil spoke frankly a few months ago in an interview about sin. The interviewer ask some questions, at least in my opinion to “make news” instead of to learn about the Robertson’s. Here is what I learned, Phil speaks his mind and doesn’t mince words. He plainly stated that homosexual offender’s, (along with a whole list of offenders), and others will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Well that’s what the Bible says. Maybe Phil could have said things better, couldn’t we all do better at that! It may not be politically correct, but here it is, sex, (any kind) outside of marriage is SIN. That is exactly what Phil Robertson said. God said it a long time ago; some in our world just don’t like it.

So the network banished Phil Robertson. Cracker Barrel restaurants pulled all Duck Dynasty products from their store shelves. It wasn’t until A&E and Cracker Barrel did some quick math they backed up, reconsidered, and changed their minds.

The Robertson family and tens of thousands let A&E and Cracker Barrel know about it, sided with Phil Robertson. Here is some of what the family officially said:  "While some of Phil's unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart' and 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Phil would never incite or encourage hate,"

It occurs to me, there are millions of people who are outraged with what a duck hunter in Louisiana says about sin, when they should be concerned with what God says about it. I don’t know Phil, I hope to meet him in Tulsa, but I have prayed for him and his family. I do know this; it’s hard to speak for Jesus in the crazy world we live in, with our lives or with our voices. I can’t imagine what it is like to have the media dissecting everything someone says; looking for what might increase their audience.

It is becoming more and more difficult to be politically correct, and biblically correct. While it should never be our goal to offend, and always our goal to love, we have to be people with beliefs grounded in the teachings of the Bible.

I figure it’s just a matter of time before PETA gets offended for what Phil does to mallard ducks and squirrels. Go Phil Go!

Have a great week! Philip Sims
